3 Reasons Why Your Regularly Scheduled Eye Exam Matters

Are you overdue for an eye appointment? Annual eye exams are an important time to not only confirm that your eye prescription is still correct for your vision needs, but also checking for the warning signs of possible eye diseases or other illnesses. Just like visiting the dentist for a cleaning and getting a checkup from your doctor, eye exams are an important part of yearly health care.

Annual Eye Exams Protect Your Vision

Our optometrist knows that it’s easy to forget to schedule an eye exam. Most people wait until they notice changes in their vision to see an eye doctor. Unfortunately, some eye problems do not produce obvious visual changes until damage has already been done to your vision and waiting too long for a check-up could be dangerous! Here at Michiana Eye Center, we recommend annual eye exams for patients for all ages. Don’t wait until a street sign looks blurry or you have trouble viewing objects up close!

Here’s why eye exams matter for people of all ages:

Children: Identify vision problems before these issues impact learning. One out of every four school-aged children have a vision problem and 60% of children who are “problem learners” have undetected vision trouble. Be sure your child has a healthy start in school by scheduling an eye exam before the school year starts.

Adults: Even if you have had laser eye surgery or another corrective eye procedure, it is still important to have an annual eye exam. Nearly 90% of people who use a computer at least three hours a day also suffer from computer eyestrain. An annual checkup will also ensure that your current prescription glasses or contact lenses are still providing the right level of vision correction.

Seniors: As we age, we are at increased risk for eye diseases, including cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of blindness in Americans ages 65 and older. Symptoms for these diseases are not obvious until later stages, which is why regular exams are so important.

  • "Dr. Anderson and his staff are so patient and friendly. Dr. Anderson prescribed me glasses and I had the toughest time picking out frames. They didn’t rush, but instead made helpful suggestions and now I have an awesome pair of frames, not to mention the fact that I can see ten times better than before. You guys are the best!"
