Choosing the Right Frames

At Michiana Eye Center, we are often asked to help our patients select a new pair of eyeglasses. For many people, this can become a long search as they try on different frames in an attempt to select the most flattering pair of eyeglasses. We thought that we would offer some helpful tips to our readers, so that you can select the best pair of frames quickly and with less effort next time you need new glasses.

Selecting the Right Frames - Optometrist Advice

It's only natural that certain pairs of glasses will look better on you based on certain criteria. While some people see this as a limiting factor if the latest eyewear trend does not flatter them, we think it is helpful. When you know what works for your face, you can look your best!

Faces fall into five different shapes on average. Is your face:

  • Round? If so steer clear of round frames, which only call attention to your face's circular shape. Square or rectangular frames complement round faces.
  • Oval? If so, avoid overly large glasses as they might make your face look disproportionate. Select wide, geometric frames to flatter your face.
  • Square? If so, avoid angular, geometric frames, as they can make your face look boxy. Seek out frames that are soft, such as round or oval-shaped frames.
  • Diamond? If so, avoid narrow frames, as they can highlight your facial width. Try glasses frames that are soft, like cat-eye or oval frames.
  • Heart-shaped? If so, avoid cat-eye glasses and others with decorative top frames, as they draw the eye toward your wide forehead. Select frames that are symmetric, like round or square frames.

Once you've selected a shape, look for a color that flatters your skin tone and your best features. When you go shopping for new glasses frames, it can be helpful to bring a friend who can offer a second opinion. While we are always happy to do this for you, a friend may better know your personal style.
